Artist: Larry Ortega
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Track: "The Omni Drumline"
This is an extraordinary piece of music, that would be equally at home played by a live ensemble of percussionists. Larry is using the contest loops in so many unusual ways, that his winning entry sounds unlike any other. First of all, his composition is in 6/8 time and all the contest loops are in 4/4. So how did he do this? He created this piece by "playing" the individual slices on the contest loops in Stylus RMX in "Slice Menu mode" to create his own rhythms and accents. Then he conceived of the idea to create a marching band "drumline" style piece, even though none of the contest loops are percussive in nature! The piece starts out with just the rearranged loops from the contest, then he adds the marching band percussion and mallets to complete the composition.
